You have just received a letter from your English friend Linda, asking you about the festivals in your country. Read a part of Linda’s letter below.
“I’m studying different cultural festivals from different countries in the world for my presentation next month. Can you tell me the most popular festival in your country? When does it start and end? Why is it important in your country? And what do people in your country often do during the festival? If one day I could come and see the festival in your country, would you join me?”

Dear Linda,
It’s great to hear from you! I’m glad that you’re studying cultural festivals from around the world. I’d love to share with you about one of the most important festivals in my country—Tết, or the Lunar New Year.
💬 I’m really happy that you’re interested in learning about Vietnamese culture.
Tết is the biggest and most popular festival in Vietnam. It usually takes place around late January or early February, depending on the lunar calendar. The celebration often lasts for about a week, but people start preparing several days before it officially begins.
Tết is important because it marks the beginning of a new year and is a time for family reunion and renewal. People clean and decorate their houses, pay visits to relatives, and give lucky money to children and the elderly. It’s also a time to show respect to ancestors and wish for happiness and prosperity in the coming year.
During Tết, people enjoy special traditional foods like sticky rice cakes (bánh chưng or bánh tét), pickled vegetables, and boiled chicken. The streets are full of colorful decorations, flowers, and music. Everyone seems cheerful and full of hope for a better year.
If you ever come to Vietnam during Tết, I would be more than happy to join you! We could visit a flower market, watch fireworks on New Year’s Eve, and enjoy traditional dishes together. It would be a wonderful experience for you to see how Vietnamese people celebrate this special time.
I hope this helps with your presentation. Let me know if you’d like some photos or more details about Tết. I’m sure you’ll find it fascinating!
💬 I can’t wait to hear about your final presentation!
Best wishes, [Your Name]
